SAFETY

At Ovintiv, safety is
a foundational value

Our commitment to safety guides how we plan, make decisions and operate. We protect our employees, service providers, communities and the public.

Part of our culture

Safety is part of who we are. Our Board and leadership set the tone, but culture makes it stick. We’re constantly improving how our office and field teams work together so decisions support safe outcomes. We continue to reinforce safety leadership and share lessons learned across the company.

Everyone has the authority to speak up and stop work. Every job, every step, every person shares responsibility. You can find all the details about our safety policies, standards and training in our annual Sustainability Report.

We are resolute in our commitment to ensuring our employees and service providers go home safely every day. This starts with safety leadership, attention to serious injury prevention, understanding core safety concepts, and reinforcing a culture that values safe work always.

Our strategy

Operations and performance management

Safety accountability starts at the top and extends across our organization. Our Board, leadership and employees all play a role. Our operations management system (OMS) supports consistent safety practices. It guides:

  • Company-wide policies and metrics
  • Standards, practices and training
  • Day-to-day work procedures
  • Employee understanding and participation

We’re continuing to strengthen our OMS to keep it effective and aligned with how we operate today.

Injury prevention

Our goal is to prevent serious injuries and fatalities (SIF). Our SIF program deliberately identifies the high‑energy and exposure hazards on our work locations, and ensures these hazards are effectively managed through direct, SIF-critical controls.

Because serious incidents are rare, we focus on learning from events that could have led to serious harm to prevent them in the future. We track and analyze this data to make smarter safety decisions.

Start work safe

Our worksites can be busy and complex. That’s why we use the Start Work Safe Authorization (SWSA) process. It makes sure everyone knows what their job is, plan for what could go wrong and how to stay safe before they start work.

Performance scorecard

We track safety in our annual company scorecard, which shapes compensation and rewards safe behavior. If something goes wrong, we act fast to address it. Our incident management system tracks safety and environmental events. Our EH&S and operations teams review this data to find root causes, improve practices, and guide audits and inspections.

Programs and training

Employee training

Each year, our Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) and operations teams work together to develop training plans specific to employees’ roles. We offer courses that guide our team on the best ways to manage risks and the procedures needed to complete work safely.

We believe everyone can be a safety leader. That’s why our Leading with Safety training helps all staff build the confidence and skills to speak up, guide others and shape a safer workplace.

Driver safety training
Driving is one of the biggest risks in our industry. All Ovintiv fleet drivers get both awareness and hands-on training. We use in-vehicle monitoring in our fleet to spot risks and help drivers improve.

Service providers

We work with service providers who share our commitment to safety. We build clear systems so safety is part of how we choose, onboard and manage our suppliers, including:

  • Integrating specific safety considerations into our agreement and request for proposal processes.
  • Developing a digital and company-wide general service provider orientation.

We also use ISNetworld to make sure our suppliers meet our safety standards and have adopted our EH&S procedures before starting work.

Emergency response programs

We value the safety of our people, partners and the communities where we work. If something goes wrong, we have strong response plans in place. We also train our staff every year on emergency response, so everyone knows what to do if an incident happens.

If disruptions happen, our business continuity program helps us stay on track. A team of leaders from across the company comes together to guide our response and recovery.
